Congratulations!
In choosing brick paving, you’ve chosen to have one of the most
attractive and versatile materials in the world used in your landscape.
We also think you’ve made the informed choice in hiring Stonehenge
Brick Paving & Landscaping, Inc. to install the project. Because we
like to get our customers off to a good start, we’re providing you
with the information you’ll need to keep your project looking great
for many years to come. One of the first advantages you’ll find about
brick pavements is that the list of things to do to keep it looking
great is short! We’ve broken the instructions into the two different
types of brick you could have installed: concrete and clay. If you aren’t
sure which you have, please call us at 788-4550 and we’ll be happy to
tell you.
Concrete Pavers
Sand
Over the
last 4-5 years we've moved away from sweeping silica, torpedo or mason's
sand into the joints of the pavers. Not that those sand types
didn't work; they performed exactly as expected. But about 5 years
ago a new product hit the market, and we've been so pleased with it that
it has replaced the other sands we would have used in your paver
project.
The sand
is called polymeric sand. It is essentially a type of mason's sand
that has had added to it a water-activated polymer. This polymer
hardens the sand when it's wetted. Water won't wash it away and
ants can't tear it up to build a new condo complex. The hardened sand
means there is no longer a need to re-sweep the joints in a paver patio
of walkway.
Sealer
Over the
years our opinion on sealing a paver project has changed a bit. We
used to recommend sealing your pavers 60-90 days after installation. And
in some circumstances, we still do. For those situations, we recommend a solvent-based acrylic sealer, as it
penetrates very deeply, dries quickly, and prevents damage to the brick
from stains, UV rays, and traffic wear. The sealer is applied with a roller, much like painting a wall.
The sealer we use recommends resealing your pavers every year. However,
sealing every 2-3 years will likely yield satisfactory results.
You can also call us
to come out and seal your pavers for you. For a fee (starting at $300)
we will come out to the site, clean the pavers (including removal of
stains with cleaning chemicals, if needed), re-sand the joints, and
apply the sealer. Please let us know if you’re interested in this
service.
Clay Pavers
Just like with
concrete pavers, the polymeric sand we use has removed the need to that
element of maintenance for your project. And because there really
aren't any sealants that you should have to apply to a clay paver patio,
once we leave the job site, the project is done. No maintenance
required!
We hope this provides
you with the maintenance information you need to keep your brick paver
project beautiful for years. As you can see, there really shouldn’t be
much! However, if you do have questions, please feel free to call us at
(920)788-4550, or e-mail us.
