Timber Retaining Walls
Timber retaining walls used to be the wall of choice for many years. They were relatively light and easy to work with, and for their weight they did a good job of retaining soil (provided the installer used deadmen in the construction to anchor the wall to the soils behind it). And with the use of treated timbers or railroad ties, the useful life of the wall was extended. However, even with chemical treatments, these walls succumb to the water in the soils behind them and rot. And the chemicals used include arsenic, which is harmful to your plants.

Even treated timbers have a useful life of only 10-15 years. This is about half the expected life of a properly installed segmental or natural stone retaining wall. But the price for a timber wall is almost equal to that of a stone or segmental retaining wall! Clearly it's more economical to install a segmental or stone wall than it is to install a timber wall. That's why we usually try to talk clients out of a timber wall installation.
